Pyrogel XTE, Pyrogel XTF and Cryogel Z are a series of blankets made from exotic substances called aerogels.  These are very low density materials which offer thermal properties making them ideal for insulation.  Blankets are formed from these materials to produce an effective, flexible, and easy to install insulation product.  This versatile product can be used instead of other traditional insulation materials, requiring less thickness and cladding.

Pyrogel XTE

Pyrogel XTE is a flexible insulation product from Aerogel for high temperature applications.  It offers the same heat transfer specifications as conventional insulation products while being 2-5 times thinner.  It is easy to handle, store, and install.

Industries that have used Pyrogel XTE include all of the aspects of the Bellis core business.  We have supplied or installed Pyrogel XTE on LNG refineries, oil refineries and gas processing plants. The ease of installation is useful in difficult to reach areas.  Low volume of insulation required reduced cladding costs.

The use of hydrophobic material reduces moisture ingress, and allows water vapour to pass through the insulation.  This aids in the defence against Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), a common problem for insulation systems.  You can find out more at our previous blog entry on CUI.

Pyrogel XTF

Pyrogel XTF is similar to Pyrogel XTE with additional properties that make it fire retardant.  This makes it more appropriate for use where the risk of fire is present.

Cryogel Z

Cryogenic temperatures present challenges that need to be overcome if the insulation material will stand up to the harsh conditions such as temperature cycling and frost heave.  It is important that the insulation is installed with a degree of care to ensure that cold spots do not form, and that moisture ingress is prevented.  Since Cryogel Z is thinner than traditional insulation products it can be installed in locations where access is limited.

Cryogel Z is hydrophobic.  In combination with the factory installed vapour barrier, this means that each layer will prevent moisture transferring through the insulation.  When installed according to manufacturer’s instructions Cryogel Z can prevent CUI to pipework, vessels and fittings.

Other benefits to these materials include the savings in cost, storage, and labour that can be made due to the reusability of the product.  After inspections of the assets being protected, the original insulation can be reapplied.  Most other insulation materials will need to be completely reinstalled in this situation.
